16: Breeding by the Checkbook

In my opinion, breeding by the checkbook is the most efficient and and less stressful way of building up one’s Pomeranian stock.  It is far simpler and less expensive than breeding the poms yourself.  For one thing, Pomeranians are not very productive and the best ones seem to have a more difficult time surviving.  It is very heartbreaking to see your pick pups die on you.  At the end of the day, I start thinking that considering all the moneys that I spent in upkeeping my kennel and breeding program, it would be far simpler and more efficient if I buy selectively the poms that I like from chosen breeders…that is, if they will sell you the dogs of your choice.

When I wanted to restart my Pomeranian hobby many years ago, it was such fun but took a lot of expensive traveling to initially acquire by base stock.  Travelling to England to get my male foundation stock was fun.  Though I was very lucky to have found favor with Derek Hill of Derronill kennels,  I had to settle for good decent producing dogs from the Hadleigh-Maxamillion bloodlines that I liked rather than the dog of my dreams.  A dog would be made available one trip at a time so it took me three years of three international trips to Manchester to get my three foundation males namely:  PH CH Hadleigh Mighty Star(a Maxamillion son), Ph Ch Derronill Billionaire(a Maxamillion grandson) and Derronill Dear Heart(another Maxamillion son).  I had to sign a contract that these dogs would be not used for breeding in England…amazing restrictions! With most of these bloodlines going to Japan and with such restrictive breedings outside, no wonder, the existence of this bloodline has been very limited in its motherland.

In short, what I am saying is that most of the time, it is not exactly the perfect dog that one would like to own that one gets.  Oftentimes, it is a compromise.  And when it comes to getting bitches, it even becomes more difficult because the secret to breeding quality pomeranians is having a good bitch.  A breeder oftentimes will let go of a good male but it is very hard to extract a good bitch from them.  I never got a bitch from Derek Hill after years and years of waiting.

Having said all these, I would jump at any opportunity when I can get an excellent male or female Pomeranian of my pick bloodline when and if it becomes available.  Oftentimes, it is compromises, compromises and compromises. That almost perfect Pomeranians seems so elusive and if it does exists, the breeder himself would like to keep him or her for their own breeding program.  Usually, the compromise is getting a dog or bitch that would possibly eventually produce the Pomeranian that you would like to own…no short-cuts.. unless you want to rob a bank.

And now, after years of buying and buying…breeding and breeding….and keeping and keeping…. I have come to a point when I have the numbers to produce good quality Pomeranians that  I would have loved to have purchased when I started.  Since I have the numbers, I can afford to let go of my good ones without really affecting my future breeding program.  It has been my vision to help people get started in a good Pomeranian program which is so hard to set up.  There are so many misdirections and dead ends that I think would have saved myself a lot of heartaches if I had a helping hand with good mentoring.

Come and look around.  There will always be something new.

Just looking around you wonderful website and had to read twice your experience in obtaining good quality stock. I myself have purchased in the last 12 months 3 poms, one girl and two boys. Gee what a feat in itself. One of the boys i obtained, is too big, 9 and half inches but massive coat, great personality and a charmer. He doesnt have much head coat which gives him larger ears and not very short in back, but he was my start. The bitch i purchased oh my she is 7 months old and looks like a Meerkat, leggy and no coat yet, she is also short in upper arm which inturn she goose steps, the problem with her is if she goose steps now why should i wait until she is older to see what she is like. I am listening to other breeders who - say wait until she is older , have a litter and pet her out, but that is a fault why would i start my lines with that. The third one is 3 months old and has just started the uglies, he has a great head, short in muzzle, good movement, so i am hoping he is my kennel stud and he is black.
My question is- should i hold onto the girl until she is 12 months-18 months and assess her movement then or pet her out now.
I cant really talk to breeders here in Australia because they all know the bitch and the owner of the stud dog and grandsire are top winning dogs here.
Thanks for listening

With a female, there is not such thing as trash. To say that is so humbug and too prideful. You can always upgrade the quality of your female by using a very good prepotent male and hopefully, he will be like a photo-machine who would put a stamp on his quality of his pups. You may or may not get good quality in the first generation, but there is the second and the third to look forward too. In other words, if the female is not what you want it to be, if you have the time, you can work on her quality upwards.

There is also such as thing as a brood female. She may not look good but if she has a good pedigree, she may have the recessive genes that are good and they can be resurrected in her puppies.
