Canton Pomeranians

I just got back from my good friend Basilio Yap’s in Manila. It is a very long flight but more than worth it!

As everyone knows Basilio is a wonderful host and really makes you feel welcome. His family is just as welcoming, two beautiful daughters, a very sweet Mom and extremely friendly extended family. 

The most awesome part of the trip was the incredible Poms he has. The studs are unbelievable! He gets his pom friends, when they visit, to pick their top ten (or 20) and I picked my favorites . They weren’t the same as my wife chose last year.  I did pick some she did and some she and others hadn’t.  It was so much fun and I would have a hard time picking who to breed to with such a variety to choose from. I guess we spent 3 days or more going over dogs and discussing the good and bad parts. He didn’t like it if I tried to sugar coat my opinion about a dog I didn’t like. By the time I left we had a plan to work together to produce the best of the best and we can!

I timed my trip so I could attend the Philippine Circuit Dog Show. The judging panel was comprised of judges from 15 different countries.  It was 12 shows held over a four day period. The dogs had the potential to obtain 6 different championships over the four days, and many did. There was a large pom entry and it might have been the biggest single entry at the show. We watched 8 of the 12 shows and the judging was very different everytime. I didn’t agree with most of the winners, and the judges didn’t agree with each other most of the time. It was a different lineup of winners at each of the 8 shows I watched. I assumed that was because each was used to seeing a different type of dog in their home countries. The standards that were supposed to be used were akc at some of the shows and FCI at the others. Most of the dogs resembled what I was used to seeing here in the US 10 years ago. They were very heavily trimmed and short legged. Most of the rears were similar to US dogs( not good) and the coats looked to be soft and cottony. There were a couple of dogs (that weren’t Basilio’s) that had correct coats but were so unsound I would never be able to award them a win. Most of Basilio’s dogs had more leg and more correct coats.   The one  I liked the best and had  the best coat didn’t do as well as some of his other dogs.  Andrew Blake judged from the UK and wrote a very good article in dog news about judging and his experience judging at these shows. However I couldn’t agree with his picks.

The other part of the trip was the entertainment, sightseeing and eating. I do mean eating, I gained 10 pounds in a week. Basilio knows all the best restaurants and we did try them all. The Manila Hotel has an awesome buffet with food from all over the world. My favorite restaurant was a new restaurant they just opened called Cowrie Grill and it is wonderful.

We visited so many wonderful places it is hard to say what was my favorite, but the Taal Volcano, Villa Escudero and canoe ride up the Pagsanjan river to an awesome water fall , by the same name are definitely at the top of my list. The river was also the site where the movie Apocalypse Now was filmed.

Needless to say it was an awesome trip!!!!!

David and Carlene Gilstrap of Mountain Crest Pomeranians have been very consistent in the poms that they have exhibited and I believe they are breeders who have focused on soundness thru the years. 

My friendly relationship started with them when I leased Seger, aka Am Ch Travelling Man and subsequently, Am Gr Ch Moutain Crest U Don’t Own Me (Buster Boy).  Since then, we have worked together.  I now own some of their bitches and now they own some of my bitches.  They  have  shown dogs for me and we have co-bred dogs together.  They have been instrumental in having my recent APC Nationals Best of Breed winner Am Gr Ch Ph It Ch Canton Jet Li being finished in the US as an American Grand Champion and specialled up to the ranking of 3rd to 5th (based on Canine Chronicles); ie,  Carlene finished Jet Li to his American title and they introduced a sponsor for Jet Li to be specialled(for 3-4 months).  Our friendship is growing and we will work together to produce that perfect pomeranian…and SHARE.

Buster Boy is one of the soundest and best Pomeranian that I have seen and he will form a intergral part of my breeding program.  I am planning to develop a bloodline around him.  He was with me for some time and his two gets namely:
